THE BIG DAYThe big day has been and gone and it was terrific. Over 100 former pupils joined partners of the school and friends at a reception in the School Dance Studio. The Guest of Honour was, of course, Alex Ferguson our most famous former pupil. After a few words from me, Sir Alex addressed the other guests. Then it was on to the Assembly Hall where the whole school was gathered to hear Sir Alex speak. He gave an inspirational talk, highlighting the importance of hard work and application in bringing success. He also said that he was very encouraged by the way that the School encouraged its pupils to develop their personality in a way that never happened when he was young. This was a real endorsement of the School's Future Skills system which identifies, assesses, develops, records and reports on skills in our pupils. Our School Dux, David Whitten then gave the vote of thanks and we left, as we entered, to the School Band playing using the new music stands and banners presented to the School by the Govan Weavers Society to mark the occasion. Then it was on to the City Chambers for the Civic Dinner, hosted by the Lord Provost and chaired by Deputy Lord Provost Allan Stewart. Over 250 were in attendance with over 100 being Govan High former pupils. I received a lovely engraved salver from Councillor Stewart and it now has pride of place in my office. We had a gorgeous dinner and various toasts and replies were made. The principal toast was by Sir Alex who was amusing and thought provoking as he toasted the School and regaled us with stories of his days in Govan. Photos, video clips and documents referring to the day will be posted on this website in due course.
